The one hair problem we all have are split ends. Split ends are very common, and can cause your hair to look dull, can cause damage if not dealt with, and can make styling your hair more difficult. Split ends occur when the protective outer layer of your hair is damaged, causing the hair shaft to split into two or more parts. While split ends are nearly impossible to prevent, there are things you can do to help minimize them and maintain healthy hair.
Get Regular Trims
Regularly trimming your hair is the most effective way to battle, and help prevent, split ends. Most hairstylists agree that trimming your hair every six to eight weeks is ideal for removing damaged hair, and promoting healthy hair growth. Keep in mind that everyone’s hair is different, so you may need your hair trimmed more or less frequently than six to eight weeks. Make sure to discuss the best schedule for you and your hair with your stylist.
Use a Wide-Toothed Comb
Wide-toothed combs are great at detangling all hair types and textures while causing less damage than a regular hairbrush. Wide-toothed combs can help prevent breakage, are more gentle on hair that’s already damaged, they’re easier on wet hair, and easy to clean. By no means should you abandon brushing your hair with a traditional hairbrush, a wide-toothed comb is simply a great addition to your overall haircare routine.
Avoid Heat Styling
Most of us (me) are guilty of using heat styling tools a bit too often. While flatirons and curling wands are great for styling, they can damage your hair, causing split ends and dryness. Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t use heat to style your hair, just make sure you use a heat protectant spray or serum before to minimize any damage that may occur. You can also use heatless styling methods like air-drying your hair.
Use a Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner
Moisturizing shampoos and conditioners help prevent split ends by keeping your hair hydrated and healthy. When looking for moisturizing products, make sure they contain natural ingredients such as aloe vera, argan oil, and coconut oil. Make sure you’re also avoiding products that contain harsh chemicals like sulfates and parabens, which strip your hair of its natural oils, and can dry it out.
Protect Your Hair from the Sun
The sun's UV rays can damage your hair, causing discoloration, dry and brittle hair, split ends, and thinning and frizzy hair. If you know you’re going to spend an extended period in the sun, make sure to wear a hat or use a UV protection spray to shield your hair.
While there’s no way to completely avoid split ends, these tips will help you maintain a healthy head of hair. If you’re dealing with split ends, or any kind of hair issue, you might want to consider a professional hair treatment.
