As a hairstylist, I get asked plenty of questions about hair care. From how often to wash your hair, to the best products for your hair type, it can be overwhelming to navigate the world of hair care. So, I've compiled a list of FAQs people ask to help answer all your haircare questions!
How frequently should I wash my hair?
How often you wash your hair will depend on your scalp’s oil levels, how active you are, and your hair type. Some people sweat more than others, and for those, I recommend lightly cleansing your scalp while showering between washes. Some scalps produce more oil, some less. If you have an oily scalp, you should wash your hair more than once a week. This will keep your hair follicles clean, so your scalp can continue to grow without issue. If your scalp produces little to no oil, you should wash your hair less, as over washing can lead to dryness. However, these individuals should still introduce water and stimulation to the scalp between washes. Massaging your scalp with water will help encourage hair growth, and help keep your scalp healthy.
What's the best shampoo for my hair?
It's all about your hair type. Look for shampoos that are formulated for your hair type and concerns, such as volumizing for fine hair or moisturizing for dry hair.
Is it bad to use heat styling tools on my hair?
While using heat on your hair isn’t the best, there are plenty of products that can help protect your hair from heat damage. Heat protection is vital for people who heavily rely on blow dryers and hair straighteners. On a positive note, using heat is a good way to help seal your cuticles. Think about when you leave a salon. Your hair feels like silk after using these tools thanks to your stylist using the proper heat protectants and the tools themselves smoothing, and sealing, your ends.
How can I make my hair grow faster?
If you want to give your hair a boost, vitamins like biotin and fish oils, as well as a larger intake of protein, can help speed up the hair growth process.
What’s important is how healthy your hair and scalp are as your hair grows. So, while vitamins and diet are helpful when trying to grow out your hair faster, the real benefit comes from their ability to help strengthen your hair. Which, in turn, will help keep it healthy and grow longer.
Should I use a hair mask?
Hair masks are especially helpful for people whose hair has been overprocessed and damaged by using heat or chemicals. Hair that hasn’t been damaged in this way can still use a hair mask, but make sure to focus more on your ends than all over your head. This is essential to do during colder months, when hair is more susceptible to drying out and needs the most help.
What's the best way to detangle my hair?
To detangle your hair is to use a wide-toothed comb or a detangling brush, and work through your hair in sections. Begin at the ends and work your way up, being gentle to avoid pulling or tugging on your hair. Consider using a detangling spray or leave-in conditioner to help with the process.
Detangler products range in prices, brands, and scents. Like you should do when selecting any product, pick the one that works best for you and your hair. If you have fine or thinner hair, you’ll want to use a lighter product, while thicker and heavier hair will need one more suited to their needs. The main thing to keep in mind is to stay away from products that contain silicone and parabens.
How often should I get my hair trimmed?
Personally, I think a trim should come when the seasons change, but again, all hair is different. If you notice after six weeks that the ends are damaged or split, then you should consider having your hair trimmed. Everyone’s needs are different. For example, someone may need their hair trimmed more often to help keep their hair shaped properly.
Can I color my hair at home?
Yes! Coloring at home is how I got into this field and knew I wanted to become a hairstylist. I had so much fun with it and I stand with the home hair heroes! But please — leave the bleaching to the licensed professionals.
How can I prevent frizz?
Make sure that you brush your hair before washing, preferably with a shampoo and conditioner that help fight frizz. Washing your hair with cold water will also help. Following the washing of your hair, wrap it up with a microfiber towel or t-shirt (which can also help prevent damage).
After that, use anti-frizz hair products and a wide-toothed comb to help with detangling your hair. If you use heat, blow dry on medium or lower settings, and dry your hair in small sections. After, style as you normally would and finish with an oil on frizzy areas to protect against any moisture in the air.
What's the best hairstyle for my face shape?
I’m a firm believer that any face shape can work with any hairstyle, as long as you are highlighting the features of your hair and face that you love. That’s the real key: finding something that works for YOU, which means a hairstylist could make any number of styles compliment your face. Have a longer forehead? Bangs! Have a rounder face? Grow your hair longer to help elongate your head and face! Starting to develop or have wrinkles? Have your hair layered around your face! What really matters is that you love your style. If you feel good about the way you look, it’s going to show.
